What Tripindi Shradh is

Tripindi Shradh is a shradh performed for three generations of ancestors who are believed to be unsatisfied or wandering. Tri means three and pindi refers to the pinds, the offerings. In this rite three separate pinds are offered, each standing for ancestors from a different level of the family lineage.

It differs from a regular shradh, which is offered to known ancestors, often on the tithi of their passing. Tripindi Shradh is usually performed when a family feels that some ancestors, perhaps ones whose names or rites are not known, may not have found peace.

At Gaya Ji, MandirMay arranges the Tripindi Shradh at the sacred Gaya sites. Experienced Gayawal pandits perform it following the detailed Vedic vidhi, and all ritual samagri is included.

When families choose it

There is no single rule, and every family's reasons are its own. Families most often come for Tripindi Shradh when:

  • An astrologer or family priest has spoken of Pitru Dosha in the family's horoscope.
  • The family has recurring difficulties they believe may be linked to ancestors who are not at peace.
  • Shradh has been missed for several years, or the names and tithis of some ancestors are not known.
  • They want to offer peace to all three generations at once, beyond the regular shradh.

If you are not sure whether Tripindi Shradh is the right rite, or whether a regular pind daan in Gaya or the Pitru Dosh Nivaran puja would suit your family better, tell us your situation when you book. The pandit will advise you before the day. Both are listed in the table below.

How the rite is usually performed

The pandit leads every step, so you don't need to prepare anything except the family details. In outline, a Tripindi Shradh usually goes like this:

  1. Sankalp. The person performing the rite states the family's name, gotra and purpose before the pandit.
  2. Invocation. The pandit invokes the deities and the ancestors for whom the rite is done.
  3. Three pinds. Three separate pinds are prepared and offered, one for each lineage level, with mantras for each.
  4. Tarpan. Water with black sesame is offered for the ancestors.
  5. Daan and conclusion. The rite ends with offerings and daan, and the pandit's blessing for the family.

The exact order, the ingredients of each pind and how long it takes are set by the pandit and the Gaya tradition. For a broader picture of the rites for ancestors, see the pind daan vidhi guide.

What to wear: white or light clothes. If a particular dress such as a white dhoti-kurta is needed, we tell you before your visit, and it can be arranged on request.

How booking works with MandirMay

  4. On the day, a MandirMay representative meets you and takes you to the pandit.

You can add a Gaya Airport pickup and drop or a transfer from Patna to the same booking. Gaya Airport is about 10 km away and Gaya Junction about 3 km. If you plan to come during Pitru Paksha, tell us your dates early, as Gaya is very busy then.

Tripindi Shradh in Kashi

MandirMay also arranges a Tripindi Shradh on the Kashi ghats in Varanasi, performed with the same intention for three generations of ancestors. You can book it on the Kashi Vishwanath page. Note that Kashi bookings are non-refundable and can't be rescheduled.

If no one in the family can travel, an online pind daan performed in Kashi on your family's behalf is another option.
