Pind daan in Gaya, and what MandirMay arranges
Gaya Ji, on the banks of the Falgu River in Bihar, is where many Hindu families come to perform pind daan and shradh for those who have passed. The Vishnupad Temple here holds the footprint of Lord Vishnu, and the offerings made at Gaya's sacred places, the vedis, are made for the peace and moksha of the departed.
It is a quiet, serious rite, and most families come to it only once or twice in a lifetime. It helps to know beforehand who will lead it, where it will happen and what you need to do.
MandirMay arranges the rite as one booking. Experienced Gayawal Brahmins, the traditional pandits of Gaya, lead the pind daan. All puja samagri is included, so you don't need to buy or carry anything for the offerings. A MandirMay representative meets your family on the day and stays with you between the vedis, so you can keep your attention on the rite itself.

Choosing between 1, 2 and 3 days
The difference between the options is how many vedis you cover. Families choose based on time, health and family tradition.
- Pind daan (1 day) covers three places. The first pind is offered in sand at the Falgu River, the second in rice at the Vishnupad Temple, and the third in rice at the Akshay Vat banyan tree.
- Pind daan (2 days) adds a fourth place. You make the sankalp and the first offering at the Falgu, then offerings at Vishnupad and Akshay Vat, and a fourth ritual at Vaitarani Tirth, done for ancestral purification.
- Pind daan (3 days) covers 11 sacred places: Falgu River, Vishnupad Temple, Pret Shila, Ram Shila, Kaag Bali, Sita Kund, Vaitarani, Akshay Vat, 16 Vedi, Panchtirth and Koop Gaya. It includes the rites at Pret Shila for those who died an untimely or unnatural death, and offerings at Sita Kund.
If your family has a specific need, MandirMay also arranges a Tripindi Shradh in Gaya and a Pitru Dosh Nivaran puja. If you are unsure which fits, tell us about your family's situation when you book, and the pandit will advise.
You can see today's price for each option in the table below.
How booking works with MandirMay
- Choose the rite and your date on the Gaya Ji page. You see the price for that date before you pay anything.
- Pay an advance online through Razorpay. The rest is paid before your visit.
- We confirm on WhatsApp with the plan for the day. If any special dress is needed, such as a white dhoti-kurta, we tell you before your visit. It can also be arranged if you ask.
- Keep the names ready. The pandit will ask for the names of the departed you are offering pind to, their relation to you, and your family's gotra if you know it.
- On the day, your MandirMay representative meets you and takes you to the pandit, and the rite begins with the sankalp.
You can add an airport pickup and drop, a transfer from Patna, or a visit to Bodh Gaya to the same booking. Those prices are in the second table.
On the day: what to expect, wear and bring
The pandit leads every step and tells you what to say and do. You don't need to know the mantras or the order of the rite in advance. If you'd like to understand it first, the pind daan vidhi guide walks through the usual steps.
- Wear white or light clothes for the rites.
- Bring a list of the names of the departed, your gotra if known, a change of clothes, and water for elders.
- No samagri is needed. Rice, sesame, flowers and everything else for the offerings is arranged for you.
- Plan for time between vedis. On the multi-day options the places are spread across the town, and the rites at each take time. Elders may want to rest between them.
Some families also follow customs of their own, such as head shaving for the male members or eating only simple sattvic food on the day. These differ from family to family, and the pandit can advise you on what is usual.
When to go, and getting to Gaya
Pind daan in Gaya can be performed on any day of the year. The most observed time is Pitru Paksha, the fortnight in the month of Ashwin that usually falls in September or October. Gaya is at its busiest then, so if you plan to come in Pitru Paksha, tell us your dates early so we can plan your day around the crowds. See Pitru Paksha in Gaya for more.
Gaya Airport is about 10 km from the Vishnupad area, and Gaya Junction railway station about 3 km. MandirMay's airport pickup takes you straight to your hotel or to the Vishnupad Temple ghat, and the intercity cab brings you from Patna airport or railway station. If you can't travel, an online pind daan performed in Kashi on your family's behalf is another way to make the offering.
