Deoghar and Baba Baidyanath Dham

Deoghar, "the abode of the gods", is a temple town in the Santhal Pargana region of Jharkhand. It grew up around Baba Baidyanath Dham, one of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Shiva, and the temple is still the centre of the town's life. Baidyanath is worshipped as the Lord of healing, and devotees come from across India to offer jal, flowers and bel patra to the Jyotirlinga.

The temple is open from 4 AM to 10 PM. Inside the complex, around the main Shiva temple, are many smaller shrines, including the Parvati temple facing it. By tradition, red cloth is tied between the Shiva and Parvati spires, which is why couples often perform the Gathbandhan Puja here. For darshan timings and the daily rituals, see Baidyanath Dham darshan timings.

The busiest times are Mondays, Mahashivratri and above all the month of Shravan, when the Shravani Mela brings kanwariyas who have walked from Sultanganj with Ganga jal. If you are planning that walk, see the kanwar yatra route from Sultanganj to Deoghar. October to March is the most comfortable time to visit.

A well-known legend explains how Shiva came to rest here. Ravana, the king of Lanka, is said to have won a Shivling from Shiva after long penance, on the condition that it would stay wherever it was first set down. On the way back, the gods arranged for him to hand it to a cowherd, who put it down at Deoghar, and there it remained. Devotees tell many versions of the story, and it is one reason Baidyanath is also called Ravaneshwar.

What to see and do around Deoghar

Most of what draws pilgrims is within a short drive of the temple:

  • Basukinath Dham, a Shiva temple in Dumka district, roughly an hour or more by road. Many pilgrims visit it after Baidyanath to complete the yatra. Read our Basukinath temple guide.
  • Tapovan, a small hill with caves and a Shiva temple, a short drive from town.
  • Trikut Pahar, a three-peaked hill with a temple at its foot and walking paths, on the road towards Dumka.
  • In town, temples such as the Naulakha Mandir and the Satsang Ashram are also popular with visitors.

MandirMay's Nearby Places Visit cab covers Basukinath, Tapovan and Trikut Pahar in one day, in an AC car for up to 4 or 6 people, with toll taxes included.

At the temple, you can do darshan in the general queue, or with MandirMay's VIP (Shighra) darshan pass, which comes with jal, flowers and bel patra and a MandirMay representative who takes you through. To book the Shighra arrangement directly, see Shighra darshan booking.

Pujas you can book at Baidyanath Dham

MandirMay arranges these pujas in the temple with experienced pandits and all puja samagri:

  • Rudrabhishek, with 2 pandits for up to 4 family members, or 4 pandits for up to 6, with garbhagriha access and aarti. See Rudrabhishek booking at Baidyanath, and the Rudrabhishek vidhi and benefits to know what happens.
  • Sankalp Puja, a personalised vow and prayer for health, peace or a wish, for 1, 2 or 4 people, with assistance to the garbhagriha.
  • Gathbandhan Puja, for couples, with the sacred ribbon tied between the Shiva and Parvati temples to seek blessings for marital harmony.

VIP darshan is not included in these pujas; add it to the same booking if you want a quicker darshan. During the Shravan season, as per administrative rules, special pujas like Rudrabhishek are performed in outer halls or shared spaces rather than the main garbhagriha.

Planning one, two or three days in Deoghar

One day. Arrive early, do darshan, and perform a Sankalp Puja, then leave by evening. Book the VIP pass and the Sankalp puja with our pandit, with a MandirMay representative at the dham, or pick a same-day Baidyanath VIP Darshan & Sankalp trip on the Baidyanath page when one fits your dates.

Two days. Day one for darshan and a Rudrabhishek; day two for Basukinath, Tapovan and Trikut Pahar, and your journey home in the evening.

Three days. The most relaxed plan, and the one most families choose:

  1. Day 1: airport or station pickup, check-in near the temple, VIP darshan with Sankalp.
  2. Day 2: Rudrabhishek in the morning, then the sights around Deoghar.
  3. Day 3: a last darshan if you wish, and the drop to the airport.

MandirMay arranges this plan with every transfer, and you can customise it. Or pick a ready-made Baidyanath Dham Darshan & Rudrabhishek trip on the Baidyanath page when one fits your dates. For more ways to plan, see the Deoghar tour package and the Baidyanath Jyotirlinga tour package.

Getting there and where to stay

Staying close to the temple makes an early darshan easy and saves you from traffic on busy days. MandirMay's rooms are a few minutes' walk from the temple, all with AC, a lift and an attached bathroom:

  • Economy: a double-bed room, ideal for couples.
  • Premium: more spacious rooms with 2, 3 or 4 beds, for couples, small families and larger families.

Check-in is at 12 PM and check-out at 11 AM. See hotels near Baidyanath temple for more.
